This book is kinda neat, kinda not. I pretty much knew about all the activities in my city. In the neighboring cities, there was information on not just the main tourist attractions, but also some festivals I am definitely interested in. Unfortunately, it didn't really mention when the festivals are or mention any resources to go to in order to find out, so that wasn't particularly helpful. Also, there are a dozen main beaches in our county... and apparently a ridiculous number of tiny beaches, because the author listed them ALL. Good thing this book wasn't called "101 Best Family Adventures," because 100 of them would have been beaches. I didn't feel like I needed to know about every 5 feet of coastline. Maybe a beach that has some special and unique feature (i.e. allows bonfires, pets, camping) would be helpful if it stands out, but just another small stretch of coastline that doesn't differ in any way to the previous one is just filler for the book, as far as I'm concerned. I did find it helpful (albeit a little strange) that it lists the nude beaches (so I can steer clear of them,) after all, this is a FAMILY ADVENTURE book. It also lists hiking opportunities, but I think the author spent much more time on the beaches, because I know about WAY more hiking trails than she does. Maybe I could provide insight for her next book...?
I am new to Santa Barbara, so I checked this book out from the library. It is incredibly comprehensive, listing nearly every park, library, beach, etc. The downside, though, is that there is very little narrative. Some of the places have a recommend icon, but it would be nice to have an explanation as to why.If you're looking for more guidance, I highly recommend Annabelle Brownell's book, Guide to Exploring Santa Barbara with Kids. It's definitely smaller, but does a better job explaining each site's pluses and minuses. Additionally, the directions (especially for the hiking) are fantastic.
