I bought this for my son but I started reading and am about 1/2 way through it. I have a general working knowledge in a few programming languages so as to not be a novice or beginner, but I am new to C++. I would consider this book to be almost an intermediate type of book. While it does deliver beginner and basic fundamentals it is rather messy in its approach. Some code examples are not clearly defined when showing what the author is attempting to point out. I find I must study the code just to understand the point the author is attempting to show. I feel it could have been much better done to show clearly what was trying to be taught at times. Granted I do find this language quite a bit less friendly than the others I have used, so there may be a bit of a larger learning curve than I am willing to admit to. However I have gone to other sites via Google search and actually learned some of the basic program structure there that should have been included in this book, I feel. I would not discourage anyone from buying this book but just be aware that unless you have a little skill in programming already you may struggle a bit with the not so clear examples.
Laid out exceptionally well. Easy to follow instructions. The only issue I have with this version is the fact that it's a little outdated.
I have spent way too much money on way too many books on C++ in a desperate effort to learn this "mother of all high-level languages", and this has turned out to be the most down-to-earth and user-friendly one yet. Mind you, I'm only about 30 pages in, but everything I've read so far has been the best of the best in terms of writing style and clarity. This is looking to be that book I wish I'd had when I was first trying to learn C++.
An excellent book. Covers some of the history of how C++ evolved from C. Good sample programs showing how various commands are used.

Love the book. All the dummy books are well written.
On pg. 6 it references a web link where errata and frequently asked questions can be addressed. I went to the site but did not find the title.I was able to fill out an email form and did alert the writer of this.Now, I seem to not be able to contact anyone to get any assistance as mentioned in the book. There is NO www.stephendavis.com as printedin the book (page 6). This is not a good indication that there is what is printed in the book. Based on that, I would be cautious in recommending the book. Caveat Emptor.I recently ordered "The C++ Programming Language" by Bjarne Stroustrup and hoping I will not need the Dummies book, I am not clearif it is supported or not.
Hard to see and copy the examples (small type) to confirm results. No random number generator information.
