Review
"The author is true to his title. Hildebrand writes about virtue with an artist's flair. He shows us the moral life as it is -- and so we can see the overwhelming appeal of every virtue, every value. It is the art of living virtuously that makes love possible and leads us to friendship and communion - with God and neighbor. A better life, the life we want, begins in these luminous pages."-- Scott Hahn, bestselling author of over forty titles, including The Lamb's Supper and Reasons to Believe. "The essays in Dietrich von Hildebrand's The Art of Living are a sublime treasury, filled with light and truth. Whoever longs to live fully and truly will do well to discover and cherish this golden book."-- Eric Metaxas, New York Times Bestselling author of Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy "The primacy of moral virtue has never had a more passionate, insightful--and bracing-- champion in the modern era than Dietrich von Hildebrand. Men and women of all faiths should celebrate the reissue of this inspired volume."-- Rabbi Mark Gottlieb, Senior Director, The Tikvah Fund“Hildebrand's thought will stand the cultural test of time because his subjects are perennial and therefore always contemporary. He also stands the test of comparison with recognized greats in the field (Plato, Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant—he takes valuable insights from all four and points out what is missing in all four).†— *Peter Kreeft* (from the Foreword)

This book is beautiful. The cover, the pages, the paper are all a delight to behold. Fitting that the first essay on reverence. It is philosophy and thick with meaning, but not philosophy beyond the non-philosophers reach. Von Hildebrand does not waste words. I would read it again.
The essays contained in this book are masterfully presented to be as practical as they are substantial. The first essay on Reverence will draw you in immediately as you explore what 'virtue' really means, and how you can apply it to your life. Hildebrand is a scholar that will be remembered for years for his pragmatic philosophy on Christian Ethics, and this book does a great job of presenting his work in a very readable fashion.I would definitely recommend this book to anyone, Catholic or not, who is looking for an easy entry-point into practical philosophy. The essays are very easy to digest, but contain much wisdom packed into a very short read.
Cool book of wisdom, based on sound theological teachings of the saints.
Great book. Everyone should have,a copy of this simple guide to good living
Timeless! Required reading in middle school?
This book provides a brief introduction to the concepts addressed in exhaustive depth in Ethics and applied to the spiritual life in Transformation In Christ. The entry to DvH's approach to the good life well lived is reverence. When I first encountered his thought on this currently despised virtue I was puzzled, such is the abject state of our culture. DvH's brief -- but jewel-like -- treatment in The Art of Living opens up a view of those among whom we live and move that changes everything. Reverence for God, for His creation, and, especially, His peculiar creatures, our brothers and sisters, establishes the context in which each of the other virtues, briefly and winsomely considered, follows necessarily. My encounter with this brief volume was an initial "What?!" followed by a series of "Of course, that's just how it is!" moments. Warning : the chapter on "Veracity" is squirm-inducing to a degree that could be envied by even the most thorough spiritual director.
This short collection of essays by Dietrich and Alice von Hildebrand is a wonderful introduction to the Hildebrand style of ethics and phenomenology. Each essay focuses on a virtue, and I especially appreciate that less-discussed virtues such as fidelity and reverence were chosen rather than the typical cardinal or theological virtues. Dietrich von Hildebrand has an especially clear style for a rigorous philosopher, and presents the archetypes of virtues and their corresponding vices with precision. Because he is discussing archetypes, he tends to makes absolute statements filled with adverbs like "completely" or "altogether." This might put off the unwary reader as being too one-sided or dramatic, but this impression dissolves once one realizes that Hildebrand is speaking of ideals that real human beings will approximate more or less. The two essays by Alice are real gems, worth the price of the whole book. I was especially moved by her essay on hope and her encouragement to remain permanently open to the hope that another person can be redeemed.
I wholly believe that the heart of true moral edification rests in the thought of DvH. His Ethics, and now this essential treatment, are contributions to the cannon of philosophy in the highest sense of the phrase. The living out of a personality makes the man- we are made and transformed by the kind of soul we live out in the world. We truly make our selves- for better or for worse. It's live or death. DvH's 'The Art of Living' is a true to experience, clear, and hard-hittting guide.
