In one of his programs, Earl Nightingale, a pioneer in the motivational, self-help movement said, “Look at what the majority of people are doing, and do the exact opposite, and you’ll probably never go wrong for as long as you liveâ€. If your goal is to stand out from the crowd, to enjoy exponential growth rather than incremental, there is a lot of value in what Mr. Nightingale said. Another way to say that is: Be a Rebel.Harvard Business School Professor Francesca Gino, author of Rebel Talent, Why it Pays to Break the Rules at Work and Life, makes a compelling case for being a Rebel. You can think of being a Rebel as two ends of the spectrum of human behavior. On one end is what typically comes to mind when we think of being a Rebel – the negative, anti-social behavior. On the other end is the positive, progressive, super achievers. Ms. Gino focuses on the positive benefits of being a Rebel Talent.Napoleon Bonaparte and Blackbeard the pirate very successfully used the concepts advocated in Rebel Talent. We get to view both men from very different perspectives. Mr. Nightingale based his advice on anecdotal evidence. Napoleon and Blackbeard acted on instinct. Ms. Gino has done extensive study on the behaviors of Rebel Talent and presented data driven evidence on why such behavior will benefit our work and life.Ms. Gino is an exceptional story teller. Her writing is highly entertaining, insightful and engaging. All the lessons and concepts are developed and told in story format. In one of the stories in the book, she relates about her visit to Pixar Studios. One of the executives was discussing the ways to keep the audience engaged. He said if the audience can see where the plot is going, they tune out. We need novelty and surprise in our work, relationships, and communications. There are many important lessons in the book – all based on real life examples and backed by research. You will get to meet and learn about many different people - Massimo Bottura, owner of an Italian restaurant which has won the coveted Michelin 3 Stars rating. Pal's fast food chain that has found a way to relieve the boredom for its employees. Doug Conant, CEO responsible for the turnaround at Campbell Soup. And many others. One of the more valuable lessons centers around the benefits of diversity. We tend to associate with people who think like we do. But that leads to "group think" and often results in less than optimal performance. In the chapter prior to the conclusion, Ms. Gino summarizes the lessons from the book into “8 Principles for Becoming a Rebel Leaderâ€. There is an extensive Notes section at the end of the book. In addition, she provides a wealth of additional information on a website created for Rebel Talent.
If you are a seeker of counter intuitive ideas that can help transform the way you think, this book is for you. From the first story that brings you into the soon-to-become legendary kitchen operations of Massimo Bottura, you'll get a taste for the format of this book. Gino shares her insights through first person observations and interviews with game changing rebels. Combining her expertise in designing behavioral experiments with a deep curiosity in decision making, Gino loads this book with non-obvious insights. Want to know why non-experts are often better problem solvers than experts? What about why we trust flawed individual more than highly competent and seemingly perfect ones? Every chapter delivers useful suggestions along with interesting stories. This book captivated my attention for an entire coast to coast flight - and as you can see from this photo, caused me to save plenty of ideas for later digestion. Highly recommended!
Rebel Talent is an eloquent book that gives voice to the noncomforist in all of us. Every page smashes preconceptions: We meet a chef in Modena, Italy, who is inspired by Theolonius Monk; we touch down with the infamous pirate Blackbeard, who managed his band as a "revolutionary democracy"; we learn that Google is built on questions, not answers.Professor Gino is a talented writer who imparts many useful lessons that will lead to greater creativity in business, such as:-- Follow the "yes, and" principle from improvisational theater. That is, accept new ideas and augment them, rather than criticizing.-- Think about what you could do, not what you should do.-- Reveal your emotions and shortcomings, which will make you appear stronger, not weaker.-- Encourage constructive dissent-- Open conversations, don't close them-- Be curious, like a kid. Curiosity tends to peak at age four or five when self-consciousness increases. We need to go back to childhood to regain our naturally open minds.Rebel Talent is a great read and a wise book. It will help you find the courage to be a bolder manager.
I'm currently in the middle of reading this book, about three chapters in so far, and I have to say that it's a very inspiring and motivating book. I can already tell that this is a very valuable book for anyone that wants to change the way they look at business or life and how to go against the grain for better results. It's well-written and researched very thoroughly by the author. I'm a very skeptical person normally, but this book is more based on actual studies and real-life scenarios and successes than just abstract thoughts. So the author actually backs up and proves the concepts mentioned in this book. I highly recommend this book.
