Making a Night Stalker, by David Burnett

Review

"David Burnett takes readers inside the elite world of SOAR, the most accomplished and secretive special ops aviation unit in the world. Burnett’s unique perspective reveals the importance of team work as well as heroism, and what it’s like to be a crewman at knife’s edge, where a moment of inattention can bring catastrophe to you and dozens of your closest comrades. Readers will practically smell the hydraulic liquid and feel the shake of the rotors as they turn the pages." - Jim DeFelice, NY Times #1 best-selling co-author American Sniper, Code Name Johnny Walker, Fighting Blind and the Dreamland series with Dale Brown

This book was like taking a trip down memory lane. Everything that David described in this book was spot on. This is a must read for anyone that has been, or is still in the military, and wants to become a special operations aviation soldier. He is very honest and forward. I laughed and cried with him as he went through the journey of becoming a Nightstalker, and deploying six times to Afghanistan. The last chapter was especially heartfelt, while I never had to go through such a horrible experience, my thoughts and prayers are with every Soldier, Sailer, and Marine who gave the ultimate sacrifice for this great nation. NSDQ Burnie!Former Nightstalker crew chief, 88-94. (Bad Boyz!)

I have been a major rotor head since age 10. In my Military career , helos saved my life one time in the Med and quickly took out accurate but ineffective mortar fire in Kuwait....before it became a place of POG’s . As such I hold Military Aviators in high esteem. There are only about four books about this unit and I was pleased to read about them. This book started off as a page turner and was initially fascinating. But the writing is not up to par with other Authors and former members of the Night Stalkers. There is a lot of bravado and gushing immature Moto speech that frankly , coupled with the Junior High writing , made me give what could have been , should have been , another fascinating book on the finest Helicopter unit in the World, a three star rating. The author was a very junior maintainer in his first deployment in a regular unit. He suffered greatly from poor leadership/ mentor ship that most Vets can relate to. In fact he had to jump the Chain to submit his package. We then get a first rate view of Green Platoon and the suck of swim quals and SERE school. Eventually he becomes competent to deploy to Combat. At this point it became a slog to get through and I was reading two other books to fill in the dearth of congruency. I’m glad I finished it. The author , like many who go to War and returns to the Civilian world , finds himself lost. I understand. But if one is interested in this unit , the other books were five star. I recommend them.

Author David Burnett may have missed his calling as a journalist and narrator. Burnett, Author of "Making A Night Stalker", reveals the previously shadowy details of selection and then the relentless training of one of the most storied and secret special operations units in the world, the U.S. Army's elite 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (SOAR), the "Nightstalkers". Burnett's account is relevant for several reasons. Firstly, it is a journalist accounting of the enlisted crew chief's life and training in the elite Nightstalkers during the Global War on Terror. Secondly, even though Burnett says he is a not a writer, he is a great narrator who writes with pace and candor. Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, "Making a Nightstalker" is a uniquely human story of the difficulties veterans face reintegrating into society. "Making a Nightstalker" performs numerous literary roles, history, narrative, confession. That makes this multi-faceted insight a gem.

This is a very well written memoir. I read this from a mother’s perspective whose son is also a Night Stalker. I read this slowly and intently wanting to fully understand why anyone in their right mind would choose to join and stay in this unit with its frequent deployments to the ‘hot spots’, repetitive trainings, certifications, and frequent family separations ~ I now understand, thank you! The author vividly brings to life the struggles, loss, sorrows, anxieties, accomplishments, and the brotherhood that sustain them all. He bravely described his life after the military, the ‘Demons’ he faced and overcome. His stories of post military struggles are shared by innumerable veterans. I hope that this memoir could be used as a tool for these veterans struggling with similar issues; letting them know that they are not alone and that there are resources they could tap in for help. Kudos to the author for a job well done!

Wow! I recently met David and bought the book out of respect and courtesy. I can’t put it down!!! And I am an 80 year old woman. We should make this required reading for all these whimpy young men growing up in todays Liberal environment. It is not only spellbinding but informative. I’ll bet very few Americans understand what “special forces” really means and what it takes to qualify. This is a keeper book, buy the hardback version.

If you’ve ever wanted a “no fluff” look at the experiences of the American soldier look no further than this book. Although Mr. Burnett’s story takes place in the context of one of America’s most elite and secretive SOF units, I feel like anyone who has ever had to overcome great obstacles to achieve a goal will relate to this story. The tales of brotherhood, deployments, loss, and “embracing the suck” reminded me of my own time serving in the Army during OIF. The story of life post-military reminded me of the battles that many of our warriors still face. This is a must read!

I have some friends that are Night Stalkers, and like anyone who has actually "been there, done that" they don't talk much about what they've done. It was really great to be able to read about what it takes to become a Night Stalker, what they go through once their in, and what it's like for them when they get out. As usual - I had no idea how in depth and dedicated their service was.And the last chapter - wow. I am so sorry you went through this, but so glad you shared it in such detail. I know many who have had similar experiences, and it seems from my VERY limited experience that only other "been there, done that" guys can really help in this regard. Well done.
